The new Birr Library is now sited in the lovely Gothic revitalised building a joining the Civic Offices. The building was originally designed in the mid 19th century as a Convent for the Sisters of Mercy by A.W. Pugin. The chapel has been brilliantly restored as part of the library. It houses local treasures such as a copy of the Macregol Gospels written and illuminated in Birr about 800 AD, the original of which is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
The Library provides a huge range of Services to the public, such as a comprehensive range of materials for information, study and recreation. The Library currently holds over 200,000 items including books, computer software, maps, periodicals, media, images, archive materials and newspapers. The library’s rental stock includes books for adults, teens and children, titles in large print, and a wide range of media including computer software, talking books, videos, CDs and DVDs.   • Tuesday: 9.30am-1.00pm, 2.00pm-5.30pm
  • Wednesday: 1.30pm-5.30pm
    Late Opening: 6.00pm-9.00pm
  • Thursday: 9.30am-1.00pm, 2.00pm-5.30pm
  • Friday: 9.30am-1.00pm, 2.00pm-5.30pm
  • Saturday: 9.30am-1.00pm, 2.00pm-5.30pm
