A copy of the Macregol Gospels is on permanent display free of charge in the magnificently restored Birr Town Library. It is one of Birr’s main Historical Pieces and the people of Birr are very proud to have it shown in there beautiful Georgian Library. The Gospel Book is a manuscript copy of the Four Gospels made about 800 AD. It consists of 169 vellum folios (leaves) about 345mm high and 270 mm wide. The book was brought to Birr in 2006 by the Historical Society, courtesy of the Bodleian Library, Oxford and thanks to the kindness of local people so it could be freely on display in Birr Town Library where each week a member of staff of the library will turn a different page for all to view.
